Upcoming Events

Things have been moving slowly and steady forwards over the last few weeks, and we are excited to announce some upcoming events this weekend, as well as within the coming month.

Last Sunday, we held a general meeting in which we decided to divide up the pressing tasks of the Foundation between committees. We formed a Mobilization Committee, which will be responsible for finding volunteer opportunities for our team members in the community, and for mobilizing all members of the Nuru Tudor Foundation for outreaches and activities whenever necessary. They will report to Moses Mulwa. The committee’s first act was to secure us a day volunteering for a local home for the elderly. It is next to an orphans home and is unfortunately often overlooked by organizations, well-wishers and volunteers. This Sunday we will be bringing some donated food and helping to cook and clean for those who cannot manage it themselves. We are also planning to bring some new videos for them to watch in the common room. It should be an excellent day!

We also formed a Training Committee, who will work to find training opportunities for the members of Nuru. These trainings should equip the members to advise and counsel residents of Tudor and to handle situations that require knowledge or experience of issues like domestic violence, drug issues, HIV, sanitation, postnatal care/child and maternal health. Thanks to this committee, we are planning a Peer Education training certification for all of our members using the international Youth Peer curriculum (see www.youthpeer.org) and with facilitators from kenyan organization APHIA II and KANCO.

We are also invited to an anti-drug rally which will take place on saturday morning. We will be there with many other organizations, including APHIA II and the members of KANCO. We hope that this wil give us a chance to kick drug out of Kenya, and not just Tudor.

Finally, we are planning a Voluntary Counselling and Testing day in Tudor to combat the spread of HIV. We have been offered counsellers by the Counstituency AIDS Control Counsel (CACC), and while we have yet to set a date for this activity, we are hoping it will occur within the coming month.
